One of the oldest creative professions connected to Jerusalem and the Jewish people is the profession of Sofrut. Sofrut is an all encompassing craft. It’s the link between the Jewish people and G-d, the Master of the universe. There are many parts to this ancient profession, one of them being the writing of ritual texts such as the Torah scroll, Mezuzah or Tefillin.

Sharing a Little of the Journey to Write Mezuzot

In a previous post, we shared some photographs of Mezuzah cases and mentioned the fact that my husband now writes Mezuzot. Being able to write a Mezuzah is actually an art with a tremendous amount of laws associated with every detail of the craft. From the parchment that the text is written on, to the specific quill used for the writing. The type of ink used to the formation of each letter, the details are numerous and the laws even more so. By laws I mean Torah laws of course.

Juggling the Many Tasks Necessary to Develop your Writing Path

I often receive the advice to focus on one thing. I was thinking about this and amused at just how much one has to juggle in order to achieve the one thing. Initially my one thing was developing an occupational therapy centre. Along this journey I was asked to write a book to promote OT. While working on the book I discovered a very real need for funds to achieve the goal of bringing it to print. Hence, after 50 rejections from known / recognized publishers the book was shelved for a number of years until I discovered CreateSpace and the option of pay per print self-publishing. This was like a breath of fresh air. Suddenly self-publishing became a viable option. I would not have to outlay for thousands of books or find a place to store them.
